Net Neutrality is Not Guaranteed

"Net Neutrality" was a term I had only just heard of a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, despite the pressing issues it involves to this very day, that seems to be the norm among many Americans. But we all use the internet every day, so it is in our interest to understand when and how it is being threatened.

Firstly, what is Net Neutrality? It is the concept that the internet is a level playing field for anyone who wants to compete in it. No one company or website can be favored by internet service providers (ISPs). This allows for equality of opportunity and free speech - inarguably American ideals. Up until now, the concept of a free internet has not been threatened.

Secondly, what is the threat to Net Neutrality? Now the FCC, and notably the current chairman Anjit Pai, has proposed changes including the creation of internet "fast lanes." This means allowing big ISPs to control the speeds of certain websites -clearly favoring the ones they want you to see in the "fast lanes."

This is nothing less than an attack on free speech. Luckily, activists have joined with major companies (i.e. Google, Netflix, and Facebook) to resist this attack. The deadline is almost up for the public to send their comments into the FCC - on July 17th. However, July 12th is the Day of Action for Net Neutrality. Millions are amassing together to show a support for the free internet. So let's use the open web while we have it, and support Net Neutrality. #battleforthenet
