Women have come a long way from the days without equal voting or education. But, let’s face it, we still have a long way to go before total equality. In many ways our society has maintained the perception that women are the inferior sex. Thankfully, there are subtle changes you can make in your everyday life that can potentially have a huge impact on the women around you. So if you’re like me and want to help fight this patriarchal society one day at a time, here are five simple ways to empower your fellow woman.

  1. Watch how you address other women.Take the derogatory words “bitch,” “whore,” and “slut” out of your vocabulary. Though somewhat culturally accepted, these words only tear other women down. In order to make change, women have to stand together. Even subtle phrases such as “you throw like a girl” can greatly influence young girls’ perspectives of themselves.

  2. Be a role model. Do everything you can to break glass ceilings and defy double standards. And once you do, celebrate it! One woman’s success is the beginning of many others.

  3. Stand up for other women. If you see unfair treatment of women taking place, try not to be a simple bystander. Don’t be afraid to bring attention to the issue and demand better treatment when appropriate. It’s scary, but it will have a huge impact on women who have become accustomed to poor treatment.

  4. Surround yourself with supportive women. It is possible to have friend groups where women aren’t constantly backstabbing each other. If you have a friend who constantly belittles you and puts you down, address it with her. If worst comes to worst, cut off the friendship, because we all deserve friends who are genuinely standing with us.

  5. Remember it’s not a competition. Though it’s very easy to critique each other for every little flaw, it only perpetuates our insecurities. Shaming women of any kind for is counterproductive and perpetuates low self-esteem. Imagine how much easier standing up for each other would be if we all accepted each other and felt comfortable in our own skin.

Just keep these suggestions in mind, and little by little we can make significant change. Empowering women is the key to better literature, beauty standards, political policies, and a economies around the world. By standing by each other we can continue the progress of the past until women are no longer considered inferior.
