Gender Disparities

Disparities are described as inequalities in treatment or perceptions simply based on differences. The term gender disparity refers to the unqual treatment of individuals based on their gender. Although we have come a long way from where we were, women still face a large amount of present day gender inequalities.

The social structures of society often perpetuate the limitaions and oppression of women through cultural norms and in some countires this is even done by legislation. By limiting women in these formats, it leaves women more vulnerable to struggling with lower wages in the workforce, self esteem issues, and even preventable health conditions. These issues are often highlighted in countries where the patricarchal system is a lot less lenient with women living as independent individuals- where basic sex education, contraceptives, and professional jobs are difficult to access. However, these are issues we face right here in America as well.

Although, gender disparities aren't as extreme in the United States as they are in many countries around the world, American women still live within marginalizations that constrain and limit us and also lead to many instances where access to education, healthcare, fair wages, freedom of sexual abuse and domestic violence are limited and largely dependent on social status and economic background.

It is important that we as women continue to keep this conversation going and the fight against this intolerable behavior strong so that the next generation of women have it a little bit easier than we do.
